Dr. Barret Schlegelmilch is an adjunct professor of the Engineering Programs at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Barret is a former nuclear submarine officer in the United States Navy with over 400 days underwater, and as a reservist he currently works on uncrewed underwater vehicles. Barret currently serves as a Technical Program Manager for model development at frontier lab Anthropic, where he works on standardization of a model ‘assembly line.’ Prior to Anthropic, Barret worked at Blue Origin, a human spaceflight company, where he held roles ranging from research and development of nuclear thermal propulsion for spacecraft to astronaut training. His research interests include novel safety and hazard analysis methodologies. Areas of expertise include systems engineering/thinking, data visualization, requirements analysis, and strategy. Barret holds a Doctorate of Engineering (D. Eng) from George Washington University, where he developed the Praxis "Applying a Systems-Based Approach to Crewed Space Architecture Safety Analysis.” He holds a S.M. in Aeronautics and Astronautics and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a B.S. in Astrophysics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
